Tokens follow a fixed route marked onthe gameboard which usually follows a boustrophedon (ox-plow) trackfrom the bottom to the top of the playing area, passing oncethrough every square. Each player starts with a token on the starting square(usually the '1' grid square in the bottom left corner, or simply,the imaginary space beside the '1' grid square) and takes turns toroll a single die to move the token by the number of squaresindicated by the die roll. When a token reaches the outer square left of itsstartingsquare it further moves up into the inner squares and nowmoves inclockwise direction. Player gets an extra turn to play when the diceresult is 1or 6. Howeverkillingis not possible while the token is in a safe or crossmarkedsquare.

The killed token returns toitsstarting square and has to go round all over again. If a player's token lands on a square occupied byanopponent's token then the opponent's token is killed and theplayergets an extra turn to play.

The tokens travel anti-clockwise inoutersquares, clockwise in inner squares, and finally land up inhomesquare. The tokens enter the board onlywhenthe dice result is 1. In Ashta Chamma game the movement of tokensiscontrolled by throw of a dice.
